The ES3J is a 600V / 3A super-fast recovery rectifier diode in an SMA (DO-214AC) SMD package, used on the secondary side of ASIC miner power supplies and on the local boost / snubber stages of hashboards. Its 35ns reverse recovery time makes it the right choice for high-frequency switching circuits where ordinary general-purpose rectifiers would dissipate too much heat in the recovery interval. Common failure mode is a shorted junction, which collapses the rail it feeds.
Where ES3J Is Used in Mining Hardware
On Bitmain APW3 / APW7 / APW12 PSUs, the ES3J shows up on the auxiliary supply rails and on snubber networks across the synchronous rectifiers. On hashboards it appears alongside boost converters that derive higher voltage rails for chip clusters. Because the diode runs at the switching frequency of the controller (typically 65-300kHz), recovery losses dominate over forward losses — so a fast-recovery part is mandatory.
Replacement Procedure
Identify the failed ES3J with a multimeter in diode mode — a shorted part reads near 0V in both directions, an open part reads OL both ways. Pre-heat the board to 130°C, remove the failed diode with hot air at 280-300°C, and clean the pads with flux. Place the new ES3J with the cathode band aligned to the silkscreen mark, reflow at 280°C for 8-12 seconds, and verify with a forward-voltage check (~0.7V) before powering the board.
