About the Product

B5817W SJ 1 A / 20 V Schottky Barrier Diode – Avalon Hashboard Repair

The B5817W (SJ) is a 1 A, 20 V Schottky barrier diode in a SOD-123 surface-mount package. Its low 750 mV forward voltage and sub-500 ns recovery time make it the standard choice for freewheeling, polarity protection, and voltage-clamping circuits on Avalon hash boards. When a B5817W fails short, the local power rail can develop an overcurrent condition that damages adjacent components; when it fails open, the circuit it was protecting loses its clamping function and voltage spikes can destroy downstream ICs.

Diagnosing a Failed Schottky Diode on an Avalon Board

Symptoms of a failed B5817W include a hash board that draws excessive current at startup (shorted diode) or one that produces intermittent ASIC errors under load (open diode allowing transient spikes). To confirm, use a multimeter in diode-test mode: a healthy Schottky reads approximately 0.2–0.4 V forward and open-circuit reverse; a shorted part reads near zero in both directions, and an open part reads infinite both ways. Mark the failed position and check surrounding diodes — a voltage event that killed one may have stressed its neighbours.

Replacement and Soldering Tips

The SOD-123 package is small but straightforward to rework with a fine-tip iron at 300 °C. Remove the failed diode, clean both pads with flux and solder wick, and orient the replacement so the cathode band matches the PCB silkscreen marking. Apply a small amount of solder to one pad, tack the diode in place, then solder the second pad. Inspect under magnification to confirm clean fillets and no solder bridges to adjacent traces. After replacement, power the board through a test fixture and verify normal current draw before reinstalling in the miner.
