Frequently asked questions

Can I use generic GPU thermal paste on an ASIC hashboard ?
Short-term yes, long-term no. GPU thermal pastes (Arctic MX-4, Noctua NT-H2, etc.) work at first but typically have lower thermal conductivity (4-6W/m·K) and shorter pump-out / dry-out life under sustained 60-80°C operation. Hashboards run hot 24/7 — they need compound rated for that duty cycle. OEM thermal gels like DOWSIL TC-3080 (8W/m·K) and Whatsminer KL1040 are designed for it.

Thermal paste vs thermal pad vs thermal putty — which one do I need ?
Paste / grease : for tight metal-to-metal interfaces (chip die to heatsink), 0.05-0.2mm gap. Pad : for fixed-gap interfaces, 0.5-2mm gap, pre-cut to size. Putty : for irregular surfaces and components with mechanical stress, 1-5mm gap, doesn't cure. For Antminer / Whatsminer ASIC chip cooling, paste / grease is standard.

How much thermal paste do I need per hashboard ?
Typical hashboards have 60-120 ASIC chips and require about 5-15g of thermal compound total (small dot per chip + thin layer for the heatsink). A 30g tube does 3-5 hashboards. A 1kg jar does ~100-200 hashboards.

Whatsminer KL1040 vs DOWSIL TC-3080 — which is better ?
DOWSIL TC-3080 is 8W/m·K, blue, silicone-based, used by Bitmain on Antminer S21 / S21 XP. Whatsminer KL1040 is 4W/m·K, white, used by MicroBT on M30 / M50 / M60. Use the OEM-matched compound for the brand you're servicing — they're formulated for the specific hashboard temperature profile and substrate adhesion.

What's the shelf life of thermal paste in a 1kg jar ?
Properly stored (sealed, room temperature, dry), high-quality thermal compound lasts 24-36 months without separation. Once opened and exposed to air, use within 12-18 months for best consistency. Discard if you see oil separation, hardening, or unusual smell.
