BM1391AE Replacement ASIC Chip – Antminer S15 / T15 Hashboard Repair

The BM1391AE is the SHA-256 hashing ASIC at the heart of the Antminer S15 and T15 hashboards (7nm process). Each hashboard carries dozens of these chips wired in series; when one fails — short, open or partial degradation — the entire chain drops out and the controller reports a low chip count. Replacing the failed chip restores the chain to its rated hash rate without scrapping the whole board.

How a Failed BM1391AE Looks on the Bench

On a hashboard test fixture, a failed BM1391AE shows up as a break in the chip-count chain — the fixture scans up to chip N-1 and stops, indicating chip N is the failure point. A multimeter check of the chip-VDD pin against ground typically reads near 0Ω (shorted die), or open. Visual inspection sometimes shows a discoloured or cracked package. The fixture-reported chip number maps directly to the physical position on the board.

Replacement Procedure

Pre-heat the hashboard to 130-150°C. Mark the failed chip's position. Remove the chip with hot air at 320-340°C using an appropriately sized nozzle, lifting straight up to avoid pad damage. Clean residual solder from the pads with flux and braid. Apply a thin layer of leaded solder paste through the matching tin stencil if available. Place the new BM1391AE with pin 1 aligned to the silkscreen mark, reflow at 320°C, and re-test on the fixture before reassembly.
