W40S12BMF5-01 Nidec 40mm Cooling Fan 16000RPM – Bitmain APW8 / APW9 / APW9+ PSU Replacement
The W40S12BMF5-01 is a Nidec-manufactured 40×40×28mm axial fan rated at 12V / 0.68A, spinning up to 16,000–17,000RPM with dual ball bearing construction. It delivers 28CFM at 55dBA and is a direct drop-in replacement for the internal cooling fan in Bitmain APW8, APW9 and APW9+ power supply units. The dual ball bearings ensure reliable operation under the sustained high temperatures inside a mining PSU enclosure.
Why PSU Fan Failure Is Dangerous
The APW9-series PSU packs 3,600W into a compact enclosure — the internal fan is the only thing keeping the power components within their thermal limits. When the fan fails or slows down, the PSU's overheat protection triggers a shutdown to prevent capacitor and MOSFET damage. In facilities without per-PSU monitoring, this means lost hash rate until someone notices the downed miner. Replacing the fan proactively when bearing noise appears prevents unplanned downtime.
Installation
Disconnect mains and open the PSU enclosure. Unplug the old fan connector from the PSU control PCB and remove the mounting screws. Install the new W40S12BMF5-01 with the airflow direction matching the original — typically exhausting hot air out of the enclosure. Secure screws, reconnect the fan cable, close the enclosure and power on. Verify the PSU operates at normal temperatures under full load.
