About the Product

ISL8120IRZ Dual Voltage-Mode Buck PWM Controller for ASIC Hash Board Repair

The ISL8120IRZ is a dual synchronous buck PWM controller with input feed-forward and advanced voltage-mode leading-edge modulation control. It can drive two independent power rails or a two-phase single-output regulator, with current-sharing support for parallel-power-module operation. The integrated oscillator is adjustable from 150kHz to 1.5MHz and can be synchronised to an external clock for phase-locked parallel applications.

For repair shops, the ISL8120IRZ is the controller you find at the top of an ASIC hash-board domain power tree, or at the input of a high-density POL converter in datacom and telecom hardware — and it is one of the parts that defines whether the hash board enumerates correctly after a power event.

Where the ISL8120IRZ fits on a hash board

Modern hash boards stack many ASIC domains in series and use dedicated PWM controllers to drive the buck converters that supply each domain's low-voltage / high-current rail. A dual-channel controller like the ISL8120IRZ is well suited to two-phase domain converter pairs, or to supplying two independent low-voltage rails (e.g. the chip core and the chip I/O bias) from a single IC.

A failed PWM controller typically presents as a hash board that fails enumeration on power-up, one or more dead domains, or a chain that boots but produces no hashrate because the chip core voltage never reaches its setpoint.

Compatibility

Use the ISL8120IRZ wherever the original schematic calls for a dual voltage-mode synchronous buck controller with the same pinout and switching-frequency range. Always confirm the marking on the failed IC against the schematic before substituting — pin-compatible PWM controllers from different generations are not always electrically interchangeable.

Common failure symptoms

  • Hash board fails enumeration on power-up
  • One or more ASIC domains read zero or low core voltage
  • Switching node looks erratic or stuck high/low on a scope
  • Burn mark visible on the controller IC after a power event
  • Chain boots but produces no hashrate because the chip core never reaches setpoint

Frequently asked questions

Can the ISL8120IRZ drive a single two-phase rail?

Yes — the controller supports either two independent outputs or a single two-phase output with current sharing between the two phases.

Is external synchronisation important on hash boards?

It matters in two situations: when multiple controllers must run interleaved to reduce input ripple, and when EMC constraints require a fixed switching frequency. The ISL8120IRZ supports both via its external clock input.

What switching frequency should I target on a hash board?

Hash board domain converters typically run between 300kHz and 1MHz depending on the design — the ISL8120IRZ's 150kHz to 1.5MHz range covers virtually all standard ASIC miner topologies.

Do you stock matching MOSFETs and inductors?

Yes. Pair the ISL8120IRZ with low-Rds(on) domain MOSFETs (PK616BA, SRT045N012H class) and shielded high-current inductors from the HPC1050 series. Contact us for a combined repair-line BOM quote.
