About the Product

LP3986-18B3F Ultra-Low Noise LDO Regulator for Avalon Miner Boards

The LP3986-18B3F is an ultra-low noise, low quiescent current LDO regulator commonly found on Avalon ASIC miner control boards. It generates a clean, regulated supply for sensitive logic — clock generators, oscillators and low-voltage digital sections — from the board's 3.3V or 5V housekeeping rail.

The LP3986 is optimized for compact, space-constrained designs and works directly with low-ESR ceramic output capacitors, removing the need for tantalum bulk capacitance on the output. This makes the part well-suited to densely populated mining control boards where every square millimetre matters.

Application in ASIC miner repair

On Avalon control boards, low-noise LDOs like the LP3986-18B3F feed the most sensitive analog and digital sub-circuits: oscillator references, PLL supplies, EEPROM and MCU housekeeping rails, and sometimes ADC reference inputs. Because these blocks are highly noise-sensitive, the upstream switching regulators are typically post-filtered through an LDO of this class before reaching the consumer.

A failed LDO produces unstable behavior that is hard to diagnose: random reboots, miner failing to detect hashboards, EEPROM read errors, intermittent network drops or clocks that drift outside the controller's PLL lock range. Replacing the LDO and verifying its input/output rails on a scope is the standard fix.

Compatibility / Where it fits

Primarily found on Avalon ASIC miner control boards (Canaan A-series). Similar LDO topologies appear on Antminer and Whatsminer controller PCBs, but the LP3986-18B3F is referenced specifically for Avalon designs. Always cross-check the original board silkscreen, marking code and package against the failed device before substituting.

Common failure symptoms

  • Miner reboots intermittently or fails to complete boot sequence
  • Hashboards not detected or detected only after multiple power cycles
  • EEPROM read errors, MAC address corruption or controller halts
  • LDO body warm to the touch with no load or visibly cracked / discolored
  • Output rail outside expected voltage or noisy on the oscilloscope

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace the LP3986-18B3F with another LDO?

Only with a part of equivalent output voltage, current capability, noise performance and package footprint. Substituting a "regular" LDO for an ultra-low noise variant typically reintroduces the very noise the original circuit was designed to filter out.

Does the LP3986 need a tantalum output capacitor?

No — it is designed to be stable with low-ESR ceramic capacitors, which is one of the reasons it appears on space-constrained control boards. If the original board uses ceramic output capacitors, keep them.

Why does my Avalon controller reboot intermittently after a hot summer?

Thermal stress can degrade the LDO over time, eventually triggering thermal shutdown on warm days. If the rail noise increases or the device runs hot at idle, replace the LDO and confirm the upstream input rail is within range.
