The PIP PTW40N50 is a 500 V / 46 A N-channel power MOSFET in a TO-3P-3 package, rated for 540 W dissipation. With an on-resistance of 100 mΩ at 10 V, 23 A and a gate threshold of 4 V, it delivers efficient primary-side switching in mining PSUs rated from 1,200 W to 3,600 W. The TO-3P package provides excellent heatsink thermal coupling for continuous high-load mining operation.
Why Primary-Side MOSFETs Fail
Primary-side MOSFETs carry the full DC bus current at up to 400 V DC while switching at 65–130 kHz. Under 24/7 load, thermal fatigue degrades the gate oxide and die-to-leadframe bond. Dust accumulation on the PSU heatsink accelerates the process. A failed MOSFET typically blows the input fuse or causes the PSU to cycle on and off. Because these devices work in pairs (half-bridge), a single failure often damages its partner — always replace both together.
Replacement Procedure
Disconnect mains and discharge bulk capacitors (>400 V DC). Locate the PTW40N50 bolted to the heatsink near the power transformer. Remove mounting hardware, desolder the three leads and clean pads. Install the new MOSFET with correct pin orientation, apply thermal compound to the TO-3P tab, and torque the mounting screw. Power through a variac under progressive load — a clean, stable output confirms a good repair. The 540 W rating provides generous derating, translating to lower junction temperatures and longer life.
