TVR14511 Surge Protection Varistor – Bitmain APW12 Power Supply Repair
The TVR14511 is a metal-oxide varistor (MOV) providing input-side surge protection in the Bitmain APW12 power supply. With a varistor voltage of 510 V DC, a maximum continuous operating voltage of 320 VAC and a 4,500 A surge current rating (8/20 µs waveform), it clamps mains-side transients — lightning-induced spikes, load switching surges, and grid disturbances — before they can reach the PSU's primary-side electronics.
Why Varistors Fail in Mining PSUs
Varistors are sacrificial protection devices — each surge event degrades the MOV material slightly. In mining environments where power quality is often poor (generators, overloaded grid infrastructure, frequent on/off cycling of high-wattage loads), the varistor absorbs repeated transients until its clamping voltage drifts below the operating voltage, at which point it begins conducting continuous leakage current. This heats the device, eventually causing it to fail short-circuit and blow the input fuse. Replacing the varistor restores the PSU's surge protection before the next event damages more expensive components downstream.
Replacement Procedure
Disconnect mains and open the PSU enclosure. Locate the TVR14511 on the input filter board near the AC inlet — it is a disc-shaped radial component. Desolder both leads and remove. Install the new varistor observing the same lead spacing and orientation. Resolder, reassemble and verify the PSU powers on normally. If the input fuse also blew, replace it before powering up.
