MCA11055 ±5A Bidirectional AMR Current Sensor | SOIC-16 Replacement for Power Electronics, Motor Control & BMS

The MCA11055 (silkscreen MCA1101-5-5) is a fully integrated ±5A bidirectional analog-output current sensor built on anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) technology. Used in server / telecom power supplies, motor control loops, BMS, UPS, solar inverters, and PFC circuits where the control loop needs accurate, low-noise, fast current feedback without an external shunt resistor in the high-current path.

Why AMR vs Hall-effect or shunt: AMR sensors give 1.5MHz bandwidth (3dB) with 300ns response time — fast enough for high-speed digital control loops where shunt + amplifier combos run out of phase margin. Primary resistance is 0.9mΩ so insertion loss in the current path is negligible, even at 5A continuous. Single 5V supply with 6.5mA quiescent current; zero-current reference (Vref) pin for clean ratiometric ADC integration; integrated overcurrent detection for fault protection.

Q: AMR vs Hall-effect — when do I need AMR?
A: Hall-effect sensors typically top out around 100–500kHz bandwidth and 1–10µs response. AMR delivers 1.5MHz BW and 300ns response — necessary for high-speed digital control (server PSUs, motor drives) and fast overcurrent protection. For low-bandwidth telemetry or DC monitoring, Hall is fine and cheaper; for control-loop or protection, AMR is the right call.

Q: How do I read the ±5A output on a microcontroller ADC?
A: The Vref pin provides the zero-current reference (typically Vcc/2). Wire ADC input to the sensor output, ADC reference to Vref — ratiometric measurement cancels out supply variations. Positive current swings output above Vref, negative current swings below. Linear scale around the zero point.

Q: How do I confirm the sensor is the failed part?
A: With known current through the primary path, scope the output and Vref pins. Healthy sensor: output tracks primary current linearly, Vref steady at ~Vcc/2. Output stuck at rail = sensor dead.
