SJK 25MHz Crystal Oscillator – Restore Clock Signal on Antminer Hashboards
The SJK 25.000 is a 25 MHz CMOS crystal oscillator in a compact 3.2 × 2.5 × 1.0 mm SMD package, purpose-designed for Bitmain Antminer hashboards. It provides the stable reference clock that synchronises communication between the ASIC chips and the control board. When this oscillator fails or drifts beyond tolerance, the hash chain loses synchronisation — resulting in missing chips, erratic hash rate, or a board that refuses to initialise entirely.
Role of the 25 MHz Oscillator on Antminer Hashboards
Every ASIC chip on a Bitmain hashboard derives its internal clocks from a shared reference oscillator. The 25 MHz signal is typically buffered and distributed across the entire chip chain, meaning a single failed oscillator can take down an entire board. Unlike passive crystals that require external load capacitors and a driver circuit, this CMOS oscillator integrates the driver internally — it only needs a clean supply voltage (1.8–3.3 V) and a decoupling capacitor to operate, simplifying both the board design and the replacement procedure.
Diagnosing a Failed Oscillator
Symptoms of a dead or degraded oscillator include: the board powers on but detects zero chips, the miner firmware logs show communication timeouts, or the hash rate fluctuates wildly despite stable temperatures and voltages. To confirm, probe the oscillator output pad with an oscilloscope — you should see a clean 25 MHz square wave with 1.8–3.3 V amplitude. If the output is absent, distorted or at the wrong frequency, the oscillator needs replacement.
Replacement Procedure
The oscillator is a four-pad SMD component. Apply flux around the pads, use a hot-air station at 280–300 °C to remove the failed unit, and clean the pads with solder wick. Position the new SJK 25.000 with pin-1 (usually marked with a dot) oriented per the board silkscreen, apply solder paste, and reflow. After installation, verify the 25 MHz output with a scope or frequency counter before reassembling the board into the miner.
