TPS61178RNWR Synchronous Boost Converter IC for ASIC Miner Repair
The TPS61178RNWR is a fully integrated synchronous boost converter with a wide input range of 2.7V to 20V, designed for high-efficiency step-up power conversion on ASIC miner control boards and auxiliary rails. It uses fixed-frequency peak current mode control with integrated slope compensation, automatic PFM mode at light load and forced PWM with the TPS611781 variant, supporting up to 96% efficiency on typical mining bias rails.
Output isolation during shutdown, hiccup-mode short-circuit protection, automatic recovery, OVP and thermal shutdown make it a robust replacement on hashboards and control boards that have suffered an output short or upstream transient.

Where the TPS61178RNWR is used
This converter sits on auxiliary boost rails that step a low-voltage logic or USB supply up to a higher rail used by sensors, fan drivers or ASIC bias circuits. Its 10A programmable peak makes it suitable for hashboard pre-regulators where input drops to single-cell levels during start-up. The fast 2.2MHz operation keeps the inductor footprint small on dense control boards.
Compatibility
Drop-in replacement for the TPS61178RNWR socket on cryptocurrency mining repair boards that already specify the part. Verify the package marking and pin-out against your board photograph before ordering. For lower-current LDO rails on the same boards, pair with SPX5205M5 or LP3986-18B3F bias regulators.
Common failure symptoms
- Boost rail stuck at input voltage — IC not switching
- OVP latch after a transient on the output capacitor
- Hiccup behaviour with the inductor whistling at low frequency
- Thermal shutdown of the IC under nominal load (damaged synchronous switch)
- No start-up at low input voltage despite a healthy enable signal
Frequently asked questions
Is automatic PFM always active?
Yes on the TPS61178 base part. The TPS611781 variant forces PWM operation for noise-sensitive rails.
What is the typical inductor for 10A peak?
A shielded SMD power inductor in the 2.2µH to 4.7µH range rated for the peak current is typical. HPC1050-2.2uH is a common fit for compact 2.2MHz designs.
Can it survive an output short?
Yes — hiccup-mode short-circuit protection cycles the converter until the fault clears, and the synchronous switch isolates the output during shutdown.
Do you stock matching inductors and capacitors?
Yes. We carry HPC1050 high-current inductors and SMD aluminum electrolytics suited for boost output stages.
