About the Product

HC-SR501 Infrared PIR Motion Sensor Module | Adjustable Delay (5-18s) Wide-Range 4.5-20V Supply Passive Infrared Motion Detection Module with Low Quiescent Current for Arduino, Raspberry Pi and Embedded Security / Automation Projects

The HC-SR501 is the standard PIR (Passive Infrared) motion sensor module for Arduino and Raspberry Pi embedded designs. Detects motion via infrared radiation changes — ideal for security products, human body sensor toys, industrial automation, smart home security, and any application needing passive motion detection without active illumination.

Wide operating voltage range of DC 4.5-20V works directly from 5V Arduino rails, 12V industrial supplies, or battery packs without level shifters. Adjustable delay time from 5 to 18 seconds via onboard potentiometer — lets you tune the output pulse width to your application logic. Quiescent current less than 50 µA enables long battery life in always-on standby. Cone angle <100° provides wide detection coverage from a single sensor. Compact 32 × 24 mm board size fits inside small enclosures.

Trigger Modes

The HC-SR501 supports two trigger modes selectable via on-board jumper:

  • L mode (non-repeated trigger) — output goes high for the delay period, then low, regardless of continued motion.
  • H mode (repeated trigger, default) — output stays high as long as motion is detected, plus the delay period after motion stops.

Typical Applications

  • Security alarm products — intrusion detection in indoor / outdoor security systems.
  • Smart home automation — motion-activated lighting, occupancy sensors for HVAC.
  • Human body sensor toys — interactive electronics, robotics that respond to people.
  • Industrial automation — motion-based machine control, presence sensing in workflows.
  • Embedded MCU integration — Arduino / STM32 / ESP32 / RPi-based motion-triggered logic.
  • Educational electronics — teaching PIR sensing, GPIO interrupt handling.

FAQ — HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor

Q: How sensitive is it? Will it trigger from a pet / fan / sunlight?
A: PIR sensors detect changes in infrared radiation — moving warm bodies trigger them. Pets typically trigger PIR sensors as much as humans. Direct sunlight, hot HVAC vents, or rapidly-changing temperature can cause false triggers. Use the onboard sensitivity adjustment + L-mode trigger + software debouncing for cleaner motion detection.

Q: What's the detection range?
A: Typical detection range is 3-7 meters in front of the sensor, with cone angle <100°. Range depends on temperature difference between target (warm body) and background, and ambient temperature. Cooler background = better range.

Q: How do I adjust the delay and sensitivity?
A: Two onboard potentiometers control delay (5-18s) and sensitivity. Rotate clockwise to increase. The jumper next to the potentiometers selects L vs H trigger mode. Default H mode + medium delay is the common starting point — tune from there for your application.

Q: Bulk pricing for production runs?
